After Joy’s party-at-the-park on Saturday, Big Rob accompanied us back to our place. He kicked it there with us until it was time for the show. I got very short notice that Common Ground was reuniting for a show on October 4th and my generous brother agreed to hang out with my kids so Husband and I could go. YAY!
He had a great time dancing with the baby and it was pretty funny. Love the Grateful Dead and my weirdo family ![]()

After getting Buddha to sleep and the girls settled in quietly (so’s not to wake the sleep babe), Big Rob shared his bottle with us. Mom brought the bottle back from Germany for him.
Husband had one shot and I had two shots of Absinth. Good gravy, but is it potent! And surprisingly tasty. It looks and tastes like NyQuil, only more robust and… for lack of a better word, hot.
I love the caption on the back of the bottle. It says “…und ich sah, wie die Schmetterlinge tanzten” which means “…and I saw, how the butterflies dance.”
By the time we were halfway to the show, I had a pretty strong, but very clean buzz.
We got to Headliners Music Hall just as Common Ground took the stage. I was so excited to be seeing them play again! They split about 4 years ago, but I hadn’t seen them play since 2002 when they opened for none other than Vanilla Ice. Unfortunately, we got there late and I only saw one song that night. Worse still, my friend insisted we stay and watch Vanilla Ice! I stayed in touch with the band via their message board, but eventually the forum became a ghost town.
Anyhow, it was an amazing show!
A video clip of the first song, “This Shot,” very likely my favorite song by them. I wish I had gotten shots of Jason (the singer) playing the didgeridoo.
Maybe next time?
(I am hopeful there is a next time.)
I drank a lot of Blue Moon in a very short amount of time. There was a girl standing beside me, also drinking Blue Moon, that resembled this bleep-bleep-expletive-bleep that slept with my boyfriend what seems a lifetime ago and I had a very strong urge to break my empty beer bottle across her face. Husband insisted I not go to jail, though. I was a good girl (mostly) and tried to focus on the band and having a good time.
So I took more video. They turned out much better than I anticipated. The pictures didn’t turn out so good, though.
They did a Blind Melon cover (”Galaxy”) that was nothing short of superb. I was really impressed - it was spot on. After the show, I chatted Jason up a few minutes and shared that opinion with him. He told me it was Rocky Brown’s suggestion. Rocky, if you are reading - excellent choice!
The girl in the picture is Jen, wife-to-be of Phil (the guitarist on the far left in the videos). She’s totally adorable and a sweetheart. Phil is a very lucky guy! Congrats to them on their pending nuptials! The guy on the far left is Troy. I have had the pleasure of meeting him twice now after talking with him for years on the aforementioned message board. And of course, I am on the left and next to me is Jason, the singer.
Shame that punk Deowick didn’t show, though.
We didn’t stay long after Common Ground left the stage. We had a couple of smokes out on the crowded patio. I was unsure Husband was sober enough to drive, but he assured me (as drunk people often do) that he was alright. We stopped at White Castle on our way home, where I ordered one of everything.
I was becoming a bit concerned when Big Rob didn’t answer the phone, though. Found out why when we got home (safely). We let them sleep while we devoured our Sliders. After a while, Big Rob woke up and the three of us finished his bottle of Absinth.
I was still kinda buzzy when I woke up the next morning, but mercifully not hungover!
Thanks for hanging out with the kids so Husband and I could go out and see my favorite local band, Big Rob.
Thanks for coming with me, Husband. I had a great time hanging out with you. It was like the old days, before Buddha! We’ll do it more often soon, I promise.
Thanks for getting back together for at least this one night so I could enjoy the love that is Common Ground. Your groove I do deeply dig. Still.

@Deowick: did you at least watch the videos to see what a great time you missed?

I am indeed a punk. It just so happened that the show was scheduled the same day as the UK - Alabama in Tuscaloosa. And my brother & I got tickets for that game like 6 months ago. Yet another occasion where our paths did not cross…

Interesting drink, I know about it from times in France, but do you know about the Bulgarian Rakia? One of my sites is all about it.
I enjoyed my read here by the way.
