BlogDay2008

Posted by tata on Sunday Aug 31, 2008 Under blogs

So, I’m going to cheat just a little bit and post about blogs that are sorta new instead of totally new to me. as part of my BlogDay2008 post.

*If you have participated in BlogDay2008, I hope you share your posts with me in a comment, as I am always interested in great new blogs to read and subscribe to!*

  1. Craftapalooza - England’s Aussie-living-in-Perth, WA’s crafty sweetheart blogs about all her crafty endeavors several times per week. She inspires me.
  2. The Akamai Knitter - Hawaii feels like another country (after all, it is so far away!). Opal spins the most beautiful yarn and posts delicious pictures of her work.
  3. Brian Green’s Blog - he’s practically my neighbor but he posts about quirky/funny/cool/interesting stuff he finds online.
  4. BlogBloke - his blog is about blogging, improving your blog, getting traffic for your blog and all-things-blogging. I think he’s Canadian, despite his Aussie-sounding name.
  5. light night rains - South Carolinian Cory Godbey’s blog wherein he shares his art. He really is quite amazing.

Don’t forget to check out my blogroll! Some really great reads there, too (obviously!).

Blidget

Posted by tata on Saturday Aug 9, 2008 Under web tools
I’ve been playing over at Widgetbox and made a blidget of my blog and feed. If you are interested in placing one of them on your blog or website, you can get yours here. They are fully customizable!

According to Weblogian, just creating a blidget may increase your blog traffic! So what are you waiting for? Get to it!

I’d love to see your Blidgets. If you make one, please leave the URL to it in a comment!

New features

Posted by tata on Wednesday Aug 6, 2008 Under blogs
I planned to wait until the results of the poll were in (only one day left to vote!!!) to announce the new features/changes on the site, but given the current standings, it looks like things will stay the way they are. That said, here are the changes:
  • Added a star-rating feature so you can vote on each post. It also includes recommendations for other content that might interest the reader.
  • Deleted the Recent Viewers widget.
  • Deleted the Crochet & Knit widget.
  • Moved the Wish List widget to its own page.
  • Replaced the social bookmark icons bar with a single ShareThis button.
  • Added a blogroll. There are 20-ish, but only the 10 most recently updated show.
  • Updated the Buzzworthy Posts widget to reflect my new domain name and shortened the list to 5 instead of 12.
  • Changed from 7 posts on the main page to 5 posts.

I hope you enjoy the changes. I’d love to hear any feedback on it or improving the layout in general. And, as always, if you enjoy this blog, I’d be very grateful if you share it! Thanks!

Tag!

Posted by tata on Monday Aug 4, 2008 Under blogs
At least there was no spray paint involved!

My plurk-pal, Bev was tagged and now I’ve been tagged. I must list 5 things about myself that most don’t know and then tag 5 others. I go over to their blogs to give them the news and the game not only continues, but grows. Meh, I’m game.

  • I carry around a List of Things to Do Before I Die. I’ve crossed two things off: getting a college degree and seeing childbirth firsthand.
  • I used to enter beauty pageants. I even won several.
  • I went to modeling school.
  • I actually like algebra.
  • I was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder when I was 14. I am certifiably crazy.
I am tagging:

Blog The Recession

Posted by tata on Sunday Aug 3, 2008 Under blogs
I’m not entirely convinced there is an actual recession. I’m more inclined to think that it’s more about inflation (particularly regarding gas prices and how they are affecting everyfuckingthing else) and lack of job security in this country. I could go off on a tangent, but it’s late and I’m not really in the mood.

There is a movement among bloggers going on and I’ve decided to join. It’s called Blog The Recession, an idea of Kristin’s over at Motherhood Uncensored. I found out about it through Margalit’s blog What Was I THINKING? Thanks, Margalit!

Blog the Recession

The premise is simple. If you read blogs, then for the month of August, make the “pledge” to click through from your feed reader. No obligation to leave a hilarious comment or send a long stalkerish email (although both, within reason, are always lovely). Just click through to the blog (not on ads unless you are so led) and if you’re feeling generous, click around to their older posts.Just those extra page views can make a big difference for bloggers who could really use the help, or in my case, where page views don’t matter so much, a big fat ego boost. (Might as well inflate the ego since everything else about me is inflated these days)(Oh, and I do link up some cool shit in my sidebar so that’s worth checking, especially today)If you feel like hopping on the bandwagon (c’mon, it’s fun and I’m a really great driver), then all you need to do is grab a button — see below, slap it on your blog, and [beg, plead] ask your readers to click through on their feed readers or blogrolls and do the same within a post.

So I’ll be clicking through this month to help out. Money is tight here, as well, since Husband just started this job so I don’t anticipate clicking on ads - even if I am tempted - but I will be leaving comments when I am so inspired. In fact, I left comments on every blog on the list before writing this post (tomorrow, I’ll hit up the list of blogs on the comments of that post). Based on that experience, I want to make a suggestion to my fellow bloggers: If you have comment moderation, please remove the captcha! All those goofy letter-numbers things are a total pain in the ass!

Why not join the movement, too, and help spread the word? If you need motivation, well there are some nifty prizes you could win if you blog about it. I’m not in it for the prizes, but I wouldn’t turn ‘em down if I won! To help spread the love, if you leave your blog link in a comment to this post, I will click through your site and leave a comment (or two!).

Operation Aborted

Posted by tata on Saturday Aug 2, 2008 Under blogs, websites
I finally decided enough is enough. I tracked down the cause (and removed the code) of the black and white images in Internet Explorer. However, when I opened IE to check that the pictures are, in fact, not in black and white anymore, I discovered another problem. Shit!

I received an error code.

Internet explorer cannot open website http://www.imnotbeautifullikeyou.com/.
Operation Aborted.
What in bloody hell!?!!?!? One step forward, two steps backwards and all that jazz. I even double and triple checked the sites on Husband’s and Joy’s computers. None worked. So, Google!
Sure enough, I found others with the same problem - Operation Aborted. And they started reporting the problem just last night! Luckily, one of the group members was able to figure out the problem and was kind enough to share with the rest of us: Site Meter. After removing the code, all of our problems were solved. If you are having similar issues, I suggest you do the same.

While we’re all here, I will go ahead and mention an update I forgot to mention in yesterday’s post I Follow. If you are using Firefox (as well you should be!), you might notice the scrolling rainbow in the bottom right-hand side of your screen. Click this at anytime and you will be returned to the top of the page. If you are using IE, well, it’s near the bottom somewhere in the middle. If you are using something else entirely, I have no idea what it might look like on your screen, sorry.

And remember, only 5 days left to cast your votes!

Inspired to count the blessings

Posted by tata on Friday Aug 1, 2008 Under blogs, websites
As I’ve mentioned before, I love to read blogs. In all honesty, I think it is satiating the need to read books, which I haven’t been able to do since the baby was born. I loathe being interrupted and well, babies don’t much give a damn about that.

So as I was reading today, I was inspired by a couple of my fellow bloggers to count my blessings. First by Jaime, whose blog is primarily about her premature daughter, Molly. Her post today was especially inspiring to me. I encourage you to check it out. Next, I was inspired by Anna, who posted that she was having a generally bad day, until she decided to be positive.

That said, I’m going to count my own blessings and share them with you.

  • My family is healthy.
  • We have everything we need. We aren’t hungry or cold or homeless.
  • I am married to the love of my life and we have a great relationship.
  • Husband is driven and ambitious. I love that about him. School is going very well for him.
  • I have plans for this weekend that include hanging out with my friend P and my mom.
  • The baby slept great last night and during today’s nap. He’s being good so far today, too.
  • I am learning to knit and have a pretty decent supply of yarn. And with my golden birthday coming up soon, I’m certain I’ll be able to indulge my yarn lust!
  • We are having Thanksgiving tonight. Sure, football isn’t on, but it will be soon!
Huh. We are having Thanksgiving tonight. How appropriate! Life is good. Photos sure to follow.
