Henry Rollins Recount Tour

Posted by tata on Thursday Nov 6, 2008 Under Events

I learned a few weeks ago that Henry Rollins was going to be in town last night. We scraped and scrounged every last penny for one ticket. My brother, Big Rob, did the same and the two of us went together.

It was absolutely amazing.

The video contains strong language - not kid or work safe. And yeah, I had a few beers, so it gets wobbly in places. (A mere 2-3 minutes of a spectacular 2 hour and 45 minute show!)

Hope

Posted by tata on Wednesday Nov 5, 2008 Under Events

We stayed up late watching the coverage on CNN. I was reluctant to count the chickens until I heard a concession speech. While I don’t agree with most of McCain’s ideals, I have always really liked him and thought he was extremely gracious when he did, at long last, make that speech.

I was still undecided as I stood in the booth with ballot in front of me. The last two elections, I voted for Nader. The last two elections, I felt frustrated with the two big choices. I’ve identified as a moderate in most ways, even if I’ve always leaned a bit left. I casted my vote as a voice of a rebel, hoping to make the statement that we the people really ought to have more than two choices.

What held me back from outright choosing Obama as my POTUS were two things: the war in Iraq and the recent bailout. I never agreed with the war, but I strongly feel that pulling our troops out before we complete what we set out to accomplish would be a big mistake. I sincerely hope that whatever plan is made, it is the right one.

Then that ridiculous bailout - $700 billion dollars (a number I can hardly fathom) to Big Business when Average Joes and Janes like my family and the families of so many I love often lose sleep trying to figure out how to get gas money, let alone make the rent or mortgage… that bailout was given to Big Business by the Democrats, dammit, and I am still very bitter about it. My oldest brother tells me on the phone last night that it was the Republicans that voted deregulations that led to Big Business needing the bailout. It just reaffirms my general dislike of career politicians, left and right.

Living in small, extremely right-wing town of Plant City, Florida for 5 years learned me when to keep my mouth shut. No way in hell would I be erecting a “Vote for Nader” sign in my yard on a block full of “Vote for W” signs. It eventually infected my character and I have been very reluctant ever since to discuss politics. Husband’s grand-dad, of whom I am very fond, has spent the last 8+ months sending me email propaganda on why I shouldn’t vote for Barack Obama: misinformation that I dismissed and never confronted him on. I daresay that if we were chatting over coffee, things would be different. I’m particularly uncomfortable discussing politics in the venue of internet email.

This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were.

It can’t happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice.

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.

Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it’s that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.

In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let’s resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.”

In the spirit of an acceptance speech that moved me, I am “coming out” to say that I am proud to have voted for Barack Obama as my president. I am hopeful that being a part of an historical event in which I participated may effect change in a good and positive way for my family, for my neighbors, for my community, for my nation and for the world.

Star-Struck

SomedayISupposeStar DerbyCityFilmFestival On Saturday night, I met with Sonnie and Elevena to see Someday I Suppose, the locally-made film that featured Elevena.

I had a great time and the film surprised me with it’s wonderful cheesiness. There was this subtle humor going on and I wanted to laugh at so many different times throughout the film, but refrained since no one else was laughing. I kept looking over at Sonnie to see if she thought it was funny…

Elevena & IStar-struckI met another one of the film’s stars and the director. It was a lot of fun. Thanks, Elevena!Ticket

Common Ground

Posted by tata on Monday Oct 6, 2008 Under Events, Video

After Joy’s party-at-the-park on Saturday, Big Rob accompanied us back to our place. He kicked it there with us until it was time for the show. I got very short notice that Common Ground was reuniting for a show on October 4th and my generous brother agreed to hang out with my kids so Husband and I could go. YAY!

He had a great time dancing with the baby and it was pretty funny. Love the Grateful Dead and my weirdo family heart

AbsinthHow the Butterflies DancedAfter getting Buddha to sleep and the girls settled in quietly (so’s not to wake the sleep babe), Big Rob shared his bottle with us. Mom brought the bottle back from Germany for him.

Husband had one shot and I had two shots of Absinth. Good gravy, but is it potent! And surprisingly tasty. It looks and tastes like NyQuil, only more robust and… for lack of a better word, hot.

I love the caption on the back of the bottle. It says “…und ich sah, wie die Schmetterlinge tanzten” which means “…and I saw, how the butterflies dance.”

By the time we were halfway to the show, I had a pretty strong, but very clean buzz.

We got to Headliners Music Hall just as Common Ground took the stage. I was so excited to be seeing them play again! They split about 4 years ago, but I hadn’t seen them play since 2002 when they opened for none other than Vanilla Ice. Unfortunately, we got there late and I only saw one song that night. Worse still, my friend insisted we stay and watch Vanilla Ice! I stayed in touch with the band via their message board, but eventually the forum became a ghost town.

The Day-After Party

Posted by tata on Monday Oct 6, 2008 Under Events, Food, Kids and Family, Trials

Embarrassed Joy Joy turned 10 on Wednesday, but her party was on Saturday at the park. Some of the neighborhood kids came, my brother and his youngest (who is precisely 3 weeks younger than Joy), my mom, and Sonnie and her gang.

She was embarrassed when we sang “Happy Birthday” in very loud voices so that the entire playground heard.

There aren’t many pictures of her that I can post since she is surrounded by a number of other children in most of them and I didn’t ask their parents permission to post their kids, so I’m posting what I can.
